Notes from Humanities about WWI and WWI: (Posted by request)
If you have anything you'd like to add, please email it to me at adle@hightchhigh.org.

- In between WWI and WWII:
- Italy didn't stop fighting and refused to give up, Ethiopia had a separate war with North Africa. (Dealing with colonial empire)
- Russia had a revolution, basically a civil war. Switched to communism system and became known as United Soviet Socialist Republic
- Japan fights the Sino War (Second one they fought). Japan looked at America and wanted to be an empire and take over land. Took over China and Korea.
- League of Nations, formalized after WWI. 58 Member states. They were supposed to limit war. (League of nations had no stuff, they didn't have their own troops.)

- World War I and World War II is often viewed by Europeans as one giant European Civil War.
- Think that because European countries were fighting over basics like:
- Borders
- Type of Government
- Political system (Known as Nation?)

- WWI ended with the Treaty of Versailles:
- Central powers lost, which included Austria-Hungary, Germany, and Ottoman Empire
- Germany's land was reduced by 13%
- Treaty dismantled German military, strict restrictions for rebuilding army, only have certain weapons, certain size of military, etc.

Hitler:
- Didn't know his dad, was raised by his mom. Got involved with local politics.
- Combined fascism and nationalism
- Fascism: Strong Central Authority, no form of argument
- Nationalism: Patriotism with huge hatred (Over the expense of everyone else. Also about your being, personality, appearance, etc.)
- Leader of the Nazi party and makes it so it's the only one (Chancellor)

Nazis:
- "Convinced" rational, reasonable people willing to consider that other countries have a role in their problem
- If they don't agree with the ideas, Brown Shirts paid a visit

Reichstag:
- The capitol building of Germany burned down by the Brown Shirts. Hitler makes himself chancellor and outlawed Democracy, make it a one party side.

Germany:
- Hitler invades Poland on September 1, 1939
- Great Britain, France, and Britain Commonwealth (All of their empire) gave Hitler 2 days to give Poland back. He didn't so they declared war.
- During that same time, the USSR started signing agreements and preparing troops (After seeing Japan taking over China and Germany taking over Poland)
- May 10, 1940, Germany invades France, Belgium, Netherlands, and Luxembourg.
- German, Italy, and Japan sign an agreement where they officially become the Access Powers during September of 1940.
